A scarf with a civet and a genet: painted by hand

Eliška tying the scarf in her hair, in riso style

This scarf never went through a printing machine. It is painted entirely by hand, with a brush, in the same inks I otherwise print on fabric with.

It is slower than screen printing, but every brushstroke shows and there will never be another one like it.

1. The hem

First I hem the fabric on an old sewing machine.

2. A colour from RISOAQUA

A jar of RISOAQUA ink in hand

RISOAQUA are textile inks from the makers of the risograph. Usually I push them through a MiScreen stencil, but they can be brushed on too, and above all they can be mixed.

I mixed the warm beige of both animals from white, yellow and a drop of black.

The yellow and the black are only just meeting. I stir until the last streaks are gone.

3. The base

The civet and the genet are sketched on the fabric in pencil. I fill them in beige with a wide brush and finish the edges with a thin one.

The first beige strokes along the pencil.
The scarf half painted: a beige civet and genet and the first black stripes on a tail
The beige is done, the black is just starting.

4. The black drawing

The outlines of the ears and the snout with the thinnest brush.
Spot by spot.

5. Done

A civet and a genet chasing each other round and round.

I wear it as a headband too.
