A Christmas civet: Riso MiScreen A4

A Christmas card with a red civet holding a green tree

The civet came back to me at Christmas. Not on fabric this time, but on a card: curled around a tree, hanging a bauble on it.

I printed it just like the civets on the top, through stencils from the Riso MiScreen, only on paper.

1. Two inks, three colours

A red layer plus a green layer make the civet with dark spots and a green tree
Red plus green. Where they overlap, it turns almost black.

I split the drawing into two layers. The red is the whole body of the civet, the green the tree, the spots and the stripes on the tail.

Where the green goes over the red, the inks mix into a dark, almost black colour. So two inks give me three.

2. The stencils

The framed screen runs through the MiScreen, one stencil for each colour.

3. Red

Paper with the red layer printed, placed against tape marks

I mixed the shades by hand, so the red would feel truly Christmassy and the green more like pine needles than grass.

Every sheet goes against the same tape marks. That is the only way the second colour lands on the first.

4. Green on top

I spoon the green onto the screen and push it through with the squeegee.
I lift the screen and the civet has her spots, stripes and tree.

5. The cards

Dozens of folded civet cards on the floor
A whole batch drying on the studio floor.
Every card is folded by hand and every one came out a little different.
